Antlers could hold clues to
stem cell research
First of all you must understand a few of the basic
properties of this remarkable tissue. The most important
aspect of the antler is that it’s the only mammalian
organ to fully regenerate itself year after year. Antler
is also the fastest growing tissue known; in elk it can
regenerate up to 1 to 2 cm per day, with growth
continuing for 102 to 115 days. Antler, also, is the
only known tissue to change morphology (e.g. changes
from cartilage to bone) as it develops into a mature
structure. Velvet antler capsules are produced from the
marrow of antlers which are rapidly regenerating after
the previous years growth has been shed.
The marrow of the antler is where the mediating
compounds are concentrated to promote this remarkable
regeneration and growth rate. Components of antler
